The debate has been raging on for years: which is the best sporting event/tradition for fans here in America. The overwhelmingly obvious pick is usually the Super Bowl, but as a pretty huge football fan, I am here to tell you that is not the case. The best fan experience and tradition is in fact the Kentucky Derby. With Derby day right around the corner, it's important to recognize how legendary this event truly is, and why those 120 seconds are such a momentous occasion for spectators everywhere.
Horse racing is the most thrilling two minutes in all of sports, and the Kentucky Derby is the most thrilling of them all. Thousands watching in the grandstands all cheering on their horse, or even three horses if they have a possible winning trifecta. Betting on horses is the most thrilling form of betting, as watching hundreds of dollars go down the drain in less than three minutes is a heartbreaking yet insane rush. There’s no waiting for an entire three hour game for the results, adding to the pressure and exhilaration.
These are loyal fans for this event just like any other sport. We have the hardcore-handicappers or the rich individuals who show up in the most elaborate outfits they can find. Even the official Kentucky Derby website recommends clothing for people that come to the race. Their website says that anything colorful and unique is much approved, with women’s hats highlighting the field.
The past Kentucky Derby’s have been nothing short of pure thrill and entertainment. Last year’s winner, Medina Spirit, was a late disqualification. In 2019, Maximum Security was DQ’d in controversial fashion. Who can forget the runs of Justify and American Pharoh in route to winning the Triple Crown.
Everyone dreams of going to the Derby at some point in their life, for people going this year, it could be one of the best Derby’s of all time. As the Derby rolls around on Saturday afternoon, grill a burger, drink a beer, and lose some money on a horse race, but just remember: you are watching history.
